Mumbai: Move over Salman and Shah Rukh. For, Ranbir is here to claim the space hitherto occupied by the two Khans. This seems to be the clear message from the trailer of Ranbir-starrerBesharam, which was released on Tuesday.
Ranbir, who plays the role of a rogue named Babli, makes fun of both the Khans in two different sequences in the three-minute long promo.
In the opening sequence of the trailer, Ranbir is singing his Punjabi version of the immortal song from the iconic Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, while relieving himself by lush green fields somewhere in north India. “Tujhe vekhya to yeh jaana sanam/pyaar honda hai deewana sanam,” goes on Ranbir, his back to the audience, gyrating to the tune while emptying his bladder. The reference to the landmark film that transformed Shah Rukh from a screen villain (rememberDarr and Anjaam?) to the nation’s heartthrob is unmistakable.
Like the Besharam version, where one does not get to see Ranbir’s face, one does not see SRK’s face for a while in the DDLJ song, where he turns around to show his face to a bewildered Kajol standing in the midst of mustard fields after the first line.
However, director Abhinav Kashyap denies that the sequence takes a potshot at SRK, saying: “There is no association with Shah Rukh. The song is used to project Besharam as a love story because DDLJ was a massive hit. Besharamis just a Romcom.”
In another sequence, Ranbir faces his real life parents Rishi and Neetu for the first time on screen, where the two introduce themselves as sub-inspector Chulbul Chautala and head constable Bulbul Chautala. And if one misses the potshot taken at Salman’s screen name Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg andDabangg2, the next sequence leaves nothing to imagination. “Sirf Chulbul naam rakhne se koi Dabangg nahin ho jaata,” Ranbir tells Rishi while gagging and tying him up.
But Kashyap, who ironically directed Dabangg, denies, though unconvincingly, any reference to Salman. “Look, the character of Chulbul Pandey is my creation. So you can say that I am making fun of myself. I don’t see Salman reflection directly or indirectly in this,” he says.
Kashyap’s denial apart, Ranbir looks all determined to claim the space of nation’s heartthrob. And the versatile actor won’t share this space with anyone.
